The rain had been falling over Sakuraoka High since third period, turning the courtyard quad into a mirror of grey asphalt. Inside Sub-Level 04, the hum of the tube amplifiers was the only heat in the room.
Akari Minase adjusted the strap of her electric guitar, her eyes fixed on the analog signal meter sitting on the corner of the mixing desk. The needle wasn't moving to the beat of Sera's bass line. It was jittering to a rhythm none of them were playing.
"Sera, hold up," Akari said, resting her palm over the strings to deaden the resonance. "Did you re-route Channel 3 through the B1 drainage pump line again?"
Sera didn't look up from her pedalboard. "Channel 3 is muted. The pump hasn't run since four o'clock."
Nekomi leaned back against the synth stack, tossing her lyric notebook onto the amp. "If it's not the pump, then someone is broadcasting on our frequency from below the storage lockers..."
